Educational Opportunities

The Yukon Hospital Corporation (YHC) strongly supports and encourages ongoing employee education and training. This is evidenced by the numerous educational opportunities offered via workshops, conferences, teleconferences and informal training sessions.

Education Days are offered every two months. They incorporate some mandatory and non-mandatory education from a wide variety of areas including Risk Management, Infection Control, Nursing, and First Nations Health Programs. In addition, individual departments frequently organize in-services specific to their areas.

Other training and development initiatives include a Career Development Program which provides managers and employees with a comprehensive set of activities as well as information to assess employee needs, interests and skills; advise, coach, counsel and orient employees to career paths; mentor employees on their path; and support managers with a variety of organizational tools. This Program will be fully implemented by December 2010. A Succession Planning Program for management positions was successfully implemented in early 2010.

Financial assistance for Employee continuing education and skill development may be available through the Departmental budgets or the Education Committee funding process.

The Electronic Health Library (e-HL) offers full-text and indexed e-journals that can be accessed through the EBSCO and OVID databases, well known amongst academics. This e-library provides access to current health information and evidence-based guidelines. It is designed to assist anyone needing access to the most up-to-date research: health care professionals, policy analysts, managers, social workers, etc.

There is an on-site Resource Centre and workspace. Internet access is available in many locations.

Staff Education Boards and E-mail list

Look for the Staff Education boards in the corridor leading to the cafeteria and in your individual departments. There, you will find valuable information on upcoming educational events, workshops, conferences, etc.

Interested employees may also receive the information via e-mail by contacting the Staff Development Coordinator at Madeleine.Girard@wgh.yk.ca
