Dr. René Soucy has been appointed as the new Chief of Medical Staff for the territory’s three hospitals and will be formally starting his role this June.

Dr. Soucy is a general practitioner who initially worked in Quebec before moving to British Columbia where he practiced in Surrey and Kamloops for 25 years. Dr. Soucy then joined the Canadian Medical Protective Association in Ottawa as a physician advisor in 2008, and just recently retired from this position.

“We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Soucy to our hospitals,” said Jason Bilsky, CEO of the Yukon Hospital Corporation. “His extensive experience in medical practice and supporting and guiding physicians will directly benefit our communities as we continue striving toward best practice standards to improve health outcomes.”

Dr. Soucy and his wife have already been living in Whitehorse for over a year after moving to the Yukon to be closer to family.

The former Chief of Medical Staff, Dr. Wayne MacNicol, is retiring after being in the role since early 2015.

“Dr. MacNicol made significant contributions to our community as a respected obstetrician-gynecologist and by leading our hospitals’ physician team,” said Bilsky.  Dr. MacNicol’s career has included roles as president of the Yukon Medical Association and the Alberta Medical Association.

Now that he is retiring, Dr. MacNicol and his wife are planning to spend more time enjoying the Yukon where they have lived since 1994.
