Whitehorse - Long-time Yukon physician, Dr. Wayne MacNicol, has been appointed the new Chief of Medical Staff of the territory’s three hospitals.

Dr. MacNicol is a respected obstetrician/gynecologist, who still practices and operates a clinic in Whitehorse. He started practice in 1981 at the regional hospital in Medicine Hat, Alberta before moving to Yukon in 1994. He is past president of both the Yukon Medical Association and Alberta Medical Association.

Dr. MacNicol’s medical leadership of the hospitals in Whitehorse, Dawson City and Watson Lake is a role that includes oversight of medical staff operations, professional standards and privileging.

“We are pleased to welcome Wayne to his new role. He is a strong and well-respected clinical leader and mentor, who will continue our focus on safe and excellent hospital care,” says Jason Bilsky, CEO of the Yukon Hospital Corporation. “He has a significant role on our hospitals’ management team to actively engage physicians and shape clinical policies that ensure the best possible patient experience.”

As he has for many years, Dr. MacNicol will remain involved in efforts to ensure Yukon continues to attract and retain qualified physicians. He will also continue serving as a member of the Yukon Hospital Foundation’s Board of Directors.

Dr. MacNicol assumed his new role on February 1, taking over from Dr. Graham Henderson, who is retiring after nine years as Chief of Medical Staff and four decades as a physician.

Dr. Henderson is perhaps one of the recognizable, respected and well-liked doctors in the territory. He started practice in Whitehorse in 1976 and ran a travelling clinic for nearly 30 years, providing medical care to people along the Alaska Highway and Haines Junction, Burwash Landing, Destruction Bay and Beaver Creek. “On behalf of our entire hospital team, I thank him for his many years of leadership, commitment and service to the health and well-being of all Yukoners,” says Bilsky.
