Revolutionizing Frostbite Care

At Yukon Hospitals, we’re proud to spotlight the work of Dr Alex Poole and Pharmacist Josianne Gauthier. Their commitment to patient-centred care and passion for innovation have led them to reshape the approach in frostbite treatment, transforming care standards for Yukoners facing severe frostbite.

Since introducing the frostbite protocol in 2015, the team has dramatically reduced amputation rates in severe cases, offering recovery opportunities that were previously nearly impossible. In Grade 4 frostbite—the most severe form, where the amputation rate is typically close to 100%—the protocol has cut this rate to 50% at Yukon Hospitals, significantly improving patient outcomes and quality of life.

“Frostbite can happen to anyone, even to the most prepared,” says Gauthier. “Accidents happen and frostbite can happen quickly–that’s why this work is so important.”

In October 2024, driven by their vision to expand these advancements, Dr Poole and Gauthier launched the Canadian Frostbite Care Network with other healthcare providers and researchers. This national initiative promotes best practices in frostbite care, fosters collaboration, and supports research and education across Canada. Their goal is to ensure that Canadians, especially those in remote and rural areas, have access to high-quality frostbite care informed by the latest evidence and expertise.

Every minute matters when it comes to treating frostbite, Gauthier says. “In the moment, accessing that expertise is very critical and could make a huge difference on outcomes.”

Through their dedication, Dr Poole and Gauthier have established Yukon as a leader in frostbite treatment, and we at Yukon Hospitals are honoured to support their journey. Their work exemplifies the power of innovation in healthcare, setting a new benchmark for frostbite care in Canada.
