Diabetes Education Centre

The Diabetes Education Centre provides several services to adults in Whitehorse, rural Yukon communities and northern B.C., including outpatient appointments or group sessions that offer teaching and on-going support with:

  • Type 1
  • Type 2; or
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Pre-diabetes
  • Impaired fasting glucose

The centre is located in the Thomson Centre next to WGH, but is also connected to communities across the territory via Telehealth. This provides you with the option to have an appointment with our health care team from your local health centre without having to travel to Whitehorse.

Our staff includes a Registered Nurse and Registered Dietitians, who are Certified Diabetes Educators (CDE) and have significant training and experience in diabetes care.

They will also work closely with your family physician, Chronic Condition Support Program, occupational therapist, home care, public health and other health care providers to ensure you receive the best possible care.

Referrals

A physician or health provider referral is required for scheduled visits to the Diabetes Education Centre. Once a referral is received, you will be contacted by our staff to book an appointment. On-going support and follow-up appointments are available.

Children with diabetes are referred to a specialized pediatric team at a larger centre by their family physician.

If you are concerned that you may have diabetes, please see your family physician or go to a walk-in clinic or community health centre to be assessed.
