Thanks to the amazing and generous efforts of Run for Mom and the Yukon Hospital Foundation, the territory is getting a new mammography unit at Whitehorse General Hospital (WGH). As we install this new, state-of-the-art technology, the hospital’s mammography services will be unavailable from November 10 to December 7, 2020.
Any urgent diagnostic tests required during this time will be done with an appropriate alternate imaging exam available at WGH and/or you may be referred to alternate provider outside the territory. This will ensure Yukoners continue have access to the care they need.
As a result of COVID-19, screening mammograms have been affected and our team continues to work hard to recall patients on a timely basis. Postponed screening mammograms are being scheduled around the downtime period.
Despite some delays due to COVID-19, WGH continues to meet national standards of routine breast screening occurring every 2-3 years. We also continue to prioritize higher risk (annual) screening patients and symptomatic patients. Should you have any new breast health concerns during this time, please contact your healthcare provider and they can request your mammogram be completed with priority.
Without our community’s ongoing support through the foundation and events such as Run for Mom, Yukoners would not have the high-standard of mammography screening and breast health care that we do. Thank you!
Members of the media and the public are invited to view the official launch of the new mammography technology with ribbon cutting on December 16, 2020 at 4:30 p.m.
Please visit the Yukon Hospitals Facebook page for a live video feed of the event. Due to restrictions for in-person gatherings, we can’t accommodate in person viewings at this time.
