We are providing a professional development opportunity for Yukon Hospital Corporation registered nurses to train as Operating Room Nurses. This professional development opportunity will provide two YHC Nurses an allowance equal to 100% of the base rate of pay for a full-time position (75 hours bi-weekly) in lieu of salary. Upon successful completion of this training, the incumbents will be appointed to regular full-time Operating Room Nurse Positions.

This exciting opportunity is available to all Casual, Temporary, Regular Full and Part Time Registered Nurses with a minimum of 2 years’ experience.

In addition, the successful candidates must be prepared to:
• complete on-line training on-site at Whitehorse General Hospital;
• complete a one week practicum off-site after successful completion of on-line training;
• arrange for a 12 week practicum at another hospital and be prepared to be away from Whitehorse during this entire period; and arrange for and complete an additional 12 week mentorship preferably with the same hospital where the practicum was completed

Knowledge, skills and abilities required:
• Knowledge of established practices and procedures of professional nursing care
• Knowledge of trends and developments in the nursing field
• Effective interpersonal skills
• Initiative, good judgment and reliability
• Advocacy and assertiveness skills • Basic computer literacy
• Ability to teach nursing practices and other relevant clinical skills
• Ability to develop and implement nursing care/treatment/discharge plans
• Ability to communicate orally and in writing
• Cross-cultural awareness and sensitivity
The successful candidates are required to have a Diploma or Baccalaureate degree in Nursing, be currently registered with Yukon Registered Nurses Association (YRNA) and have current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (C.P.R) certification. As well, successful candidates must have a minimum of 2 years nursing experience.

NOTE: All costs associated with this training opportunity (i.e., tuition, text books, rented accommodation, and travel expenses to and from Whitehorse) will be fully paid by Yukon Hospital Corporation. A return of service commitment in Surgical Services from each successful candidate will be required and is dependent on the level of funding provided to each candidate. This opportunity is governed by PIPSC CA article F-7: Education and Professional Development. As well, this mentorship opportunity is excluded from Article E-2, however, YHC is committed to using a competitive process to determine the best suitable candidates for these opportunities.
