The expansion of Whitehorse General Hospital is the first large-scale enhancement to the facility in 20 years. One of the largest development projects in the territory, completion is expected in December 2017.
Phase One: MRI Facility - Complete
The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) facility at Whitehorse General Hospital is now open. Highlights include:
- a state-of-the-art 1.5-Tesla Siemens Magnetom Aera MRI scanner
- a beautiful back-lit photo of northern lights over Two Moose Lake, Yukon, on the ceiling above the scanner, designed to offer patient comfort by providing a focal point during an exam
- patient preparation areas
- a reception and waiting room
Phase Two: Expansion and Modernization
A significant 40,000 sq. ft., two-storey expansion wing will be built on the east side of the existing hospital building. The key features of the expansion will be:
- patient care space that meets today’s standards for Canadian healthcare facilities in patient safety, comfort, infection control, and security
- a new emergency department with an increased number of treatment spaces
- a second floor that can be completed in the future for more inpatient beds
- a data centre for hospital information systems
- improvements to the building’s power infrastructure to support expansion
