Specialist Programs & Services

Specialist Clinic

The Specialist Clinic at Whitehorse General Hospital is home to a variety of visiting physicians, who provide consultation and/or surgical expertise in a number of medical specialties and serve as a resource for local physicians.

All patients require a referral from a family doctor. The visiting specialist will assess and prioritize the referrals as urgent, time sensitive, or routine based on the information provided. All urgent patients are seen first and it is difficult to provide an exact length of time patients can expect to remain on the wait list.

The need for specialty services is assessed by a committee comprised of Yukon Government, Yukon Hospital Corporation and local physicians.

Therapy Services (Medical Rehabilitation)

At this time, hospital-based inpatient and outpatient Therapy Services, including occupational and physiotherapy, are only offered at Whitehorse General Hospital. In order to access the service all clients must have a referral from a physician or Nurse Practitioner. Clients with WCB claims are generally not seen by our department. Clients with extended health or third-party coverage are encouraged to attend private OT/PT services.

All referrals are assessed and prioritized for urgent care needs. Our goal is to see all urgent referrals within seven (7) days. Since we offer therapy services to all Yukoners, there may be significant wait times for any non-urgent referrals.
