Emergency Services at Whitehorse General Hospital

The emergency department at Whitehorse General Hospital provides health care on a non-scheduled, outpatient basis for more than 32,000 visits each year. Health care is available 24 hours a day, year-round by a highly skilled team of doctors and nurses as well as diagnostic and support services staff.

Where to Go
  • Enter the hospital through the emergency department's main entrance.
  • Check in with a nurse for an initial assessment (triage) or wait in one of the red chairs to be seen by the nurse.
  • After your assessment, you will register by confirming your information.
  • You’ll be directed into the Emergency Department based on priority and your specific health needs

What to Do
  • You will proceed directly to the “triage” nurse who will complete a brief medical history and assessment. Triage is the process to determine medical priority for treatment. This provides you with immediate medical attention, if needed, and ensures the most ill patients are seen first. This is standard practice for emergency departments across Canada.
  • After the assessment, you will be asked to register and may be taken directly into a treatment area or asked to have a seat in the waiting room.
  • While waiting, if you feel your condition has become worse, let the triage nurse know right away.

What to Bring
  • Your Yukon Health Care Card or other medical insurance card
  • Your Status card
  • A list of all medications (pills or other drugs) you take as well as the bottles or packages they came in. This includes prescriptions, vitamins, pain relievers like Tylenol or Advil, health supplements and herbal remedies
  • Any records you have concerning your health.

Why Are You Waiting?
  • Physicians and nurses are working as quickly as possible to see patients in order of the most need.
  • Ambulances often arrive at the Emergency Department where you cannot see them. They will be seen first if their needs are assessed to be more urgent than patients in the waiting room.
  • Depending on your condition, you may have to wait for a special room or equipment to be available.

How Can You Help?
  • If you feel your visit is not urgent and the time of your visit is during your family doctor’s office hours, call your family doctor first to see if you need to come to the hospital, or if you could go to a walk-in clinic.
  • Bring a current list of all medications, including non-prescription, and all bottles and packages.
  • If you wish to leave before seeing the doctor, please speak to the nurse first.
  • Please do not eat or drink unless you have checked with the nurse first.
  • If you feel your condition has changed since you first arrived, please inform the nurse immediately.
  • Share any concerns or feedback about our emergency department with the manager at 867-393-8773
